AI Executive Order Aims to Strengthen State Cybersecurity

A new executive order directs the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to provide guidance on artificial intelligence to federal, state and local authorities. President Donald Trump’s June 2 EO calls for expanding AI innovation across government. Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security asks CISA to: “facilitate access to cybersecurity tools and services including, where appropriate, covered frontier models for agencies, state and local authorities …” The order emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts to modernize government information systems to shield them from external threats.  The order also directs the federal government to direct funds from federal grant programs to applicants to develop AI vulnerability detection.

Bill Proposes Restoring MS-ISAC Funding for State Cybersecurity

Sen. Mark Warner introduced a bill to restore funding to the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center. According to a June 5 press release, Warner introduced the Guaranteeing Universal Access to Cybersecurity Act to fund the MS-ISAC; the program provides free cybersecurity resources and monitoring to 19,000 state, local, territorial, Tribal organizations and communities. In a June 8  statement, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers voiced support for Warner’s efforts to restore funding to MS-ISAC. “State and local governments rely on the services provided by MS-ISAC to detect and respond to cyber threats and to ensure that they can provide vital digital services to citizens across the nation,” NASCIO said. Warner wrote to governors, “I write to you as the senior Senator for the Commonwealth of Virginia and its former Governor. I do so with urgency as the critical infrastructure in your state faces growing and underappreciated threats from adversaries wielding artificial intelligence (AI) tools capable of debilitating our national security, economy, and public health.”
