Iowa: Snapshot of Occupational Licensing

The 2023 State Occupational Licensing Index ranks Iowa 26th nationally—with first the most burdensome. According to the Knee Center for the Study of Occupational Regulation, Iowa makes it illegal to work in 180 of the 331 occupations examined. Of those 180 occupations, 23 occupations are licensed in 20 states or fewer nationally; Iowa remains one of only two states, for example, to license the occupations of: certified prevention professional advanced (CPPA) and electrical sign installers.
