Minn. IT Leader on Developing Trust Between the Legislature and the State CIO Office

The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) interviews Brandon Hirsch, Director of Government Relations for Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) on Jan. 24. He shares how to cultivate trust with the legislature, including spending time with and staying engaged with legislators. He also reflects on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s recently released budget. He says the budget includes “historic investment in technology modernization and cybersecurity.”

Wyo. Legislation Would Combine CIO Office and Technology Division

A bill introduced on January 26 in the Wyoming legislature would consolidate the state’s technology department with the state’s office of the chief information officer; the bill combines the budgets and duties for both offices under the new Department of Administration and Information. According to Statescoop, the bill specifies that at the end of the two-year fiscal period in 2024 the new department’s director submits a budget to the governor.

Federal Judge Threatens to Hold Texas Child Welfare Agency in Contempt-of-Court

A U.S District Judge threatened the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services with contempt-of-court fines for failing to make progress on foster care reforms. She cited failure to follow through with three of her orders. According to the Texas Tribune on January 27, her mandates included “youths not knowing their rights, not adequately responding to abuse allegations and too many children without placement.” The case was first filed in 2011.
