Report: Modernizing to Attract & Retain Cyber Talent

A report on state government cybersecurity workforce aims to help states by identifying the steps needed to bridge their cybersecurity workforce challenges. Securing States: Modernizing to Attract & Retain Cyber Talent shares the best practices of governors’ policy advisors, state information technology and cybersecurity leaders, workforce professionals and other experts. The National Association of Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) partnered with the National Governor’s Association (NGA) to create the March report. “Recruiting and retaining a qualified workforce is increasingly difficult and presents distinct challenges to the cybersecurity industry, an industry that is feeling the impacts of a global shortage of 3.4 million worker,” according to the report.  Listen to the co-authors discuss the results on the NASCIO Voices podcast.

2022 Occupational Licensing Trends

The National Conference of State Legislatures reviewed legislation efforts in 2022. NCSL identified four key licensing trends for states; these include: worker mobility, universal licensure recognition, reducing barriers for veterans and military spouses, as well as sunrise/sunset provisions. According to the report, in 2022, for example, “49 bills across 22 states were introduced and 25 were passed related to the common goal of reducing barriers to licensing for veterans, military personnel and their spouses.”

Fla. DCF to Take Over Child Protective Services

The Florida Department of Children and Families plans to take over child protective services in the seven counties that remain for the agency to oversee. Currently, the local sheriffs in those counties handle their own investigations, according to Governing on March 22. Department spokesperson Laura Walthall said both parties agreed “it would be best to have CPI functions handled by one entity across the state to facilitate uniformity and continuity as we continue to enhance prevention focused programming and integrating this function within other crisis-oriented models.”
