FSMB Updates COVID Misinformation Policy

The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) recently updated their policy on “Professional Expectations Regarding Medical Misinformation and Disinformation.” The Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation (CLEAR) interviewed Katie Templeton, the chair of the Federation of State Medical Boards Ethics and Professional Committee. In the September 8 interview, Templeton said, “we feel strongly that state boards should retain their autonomy to regulate professional conduct and protect the public in their specific state or territory. State boards are the single best entity to protect the public, and this authority should not be negated.”

A New Jersey bill proposes that anyone providing home improvement or elevation services in New Jersey must obtain a license to practice. According to the New Jersey Monitor on September 16, the bill also proposes the creation of a nine-member state board to enforce those rules. Assemblyman Paul Moriarty, who chairs the consumer affairs panel, said “the state has failed to protect homeowners that have home repairs by not having a system in place to license home contractors and make sure that they have some level of expertise.”
