Ill. Prioritizes Accessibility in IT Planning

On the October 27 Statescoop Priorities podcast, leaders from the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology say they’re working to integrate accessibility into how they plan for the state’s technology initiatives. Accessing Illinois, the department’s project to increase accessibility won a NASCIO special recognition award. Illinois Chief Information Officer Jennifer Ricker and Illinois Chief Information Accessibility Officer Mike Scott shared that their focus includes improving accessibility of websites and ensuring vendor products meet accessibility requirements. Scott finds the department in a “positive space” related to accessibility—receiving cooperation and enthusiasm from other agencies in the state. 

Fla. Judge Criticizes State for Slow Medical Cannabis Licensing

A Florida judge criticized the state’s health officials for not awarding more medical cannabis licenses—as the law requires, according to MJBizDaily. Appeals Court Judge Ross Bilbrey wrote, “almost five years after the emergency rule was issued, the (state) license application window remains closed,” the News Service of Florida reported. The state currently has 22 medical marijuana operators; however, with 700,000 medical marijuana card holders in the state, there should be 22 more, according to the news service.

Va. Eases Social Work Licensing Rules for Out-of-State Applicants

The Virginia Board of Social Work made regulatory changes that enable out of state applicants to get a license more easily in the state. According to The Center Square on October 27, under the revised rules, the process of getting a license in Virginia will be easier for a licensed social worker, a licensed master’s social worker or a licensed baccalaureate social worker from a different state. In a statement, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin said, “There is a critical shortage in Virginia of mental health professionals, and this is a significant step by the Board of Social Work to help address this shortage.”
