Pennsylvania changed the nursing permitting process for recent nursing graduates to help fill a staffing shortage at the state’s health care facilities. The Department of State said that the State Board of Nursing plans to issue temporary practice permits to confirmed graduates from a state nursing school. According to Yahoo! News on July 29, recent data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shows 39 Pennsylvania hospitals reporting critical staff shortages.
The Massachusetts Senate passed legislation on July 30 in response to a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling related to handgun licensing. The bill removes a “firearm licensing authority’s and the Massachusetts State Police’s discretion in issuing, renewing or restricting licenses to carry firearms.” The Senate Ways and Means Chair Michael Rodrigues explains that the bill makes small changes to bring the state’s gun licensing law into compliance with the federal decision, according to Governing on August 1.
