2024 State Summary on AI – ‘Wave of AI Legislation’

The Software Alliance describes a “wave of AI legislation” building in states, pointing to almost 700 AI-related bills introduced in 2024. In 2023, those bills numbered just 200, according to the October 22 report. The report also delves into states directing government’s use of AI, with 19 states discussing legislation related to government using AI to improve services. Stats on those 2024 bills, at this time, include 113 bills enacted and 77 bills advanced through one chamber.

Kentucky Foster Youth Sleeping in Offices Triggers Probe

After receiving multiple reports of Kentucky foster children sleeping in office buildings, unsupervised by trained staff, the Office of the Ombudsman plans an investigation. State Auditor Allison Ball said they will investigate the Cabinet for Health and Family Services to understand the causes, according to the Kentucky Lantern on October 29. Terry Brooks, the executive director of Kentucky Youth Advocates, said the problem “involves a ‘niche population’ of high-needs youth who likely need specialized care.”

The National Association of State Chief Information Officers recently released the results of a survey of chief information officers about data quality and GenAI. An October 17 webcast provided a recap of that information, featuring panelists that discussed insights from the report; these panelists included: Chris Estes of EY, Christie Burris, CDO, North Carolina, and Bill Smith, CIO, Alaska.
