Four Ways States Use GenAI in Business Processes, Survey Reveals

A NASCIO survey of 49 state CIOs reveals how states currently use GenAI in certain business processes. The results, released September 29, showcase the top GenAI business practices in use—as well as those piloted by states. The top four in use include: virtual meeting assistant transcription, cybersecurity operations, document generation and management, and software code generation. The 2024 State CIO Survey: Building Blocks of the Next Generation CIO includes responses to questions on nine topics, including service delivery.

CISOs: Rise of AI Brings Threats and Challenges

A survey of CISOs on the topic of cybersecurity revealed five common themes, showcasing the challenges CISOs face. And corresponding calls to action suggest how to address each issue. The 2024 Deloitte-NASCIO Cybersecurity Study, released September 30, recognized one of those themes as: the rise of AI and GenAI brings new threats and challenges. In addition, 41% of CISOs reported they were “not very confident” or “not confident at all” about “protecting their state from AI threats,” according to survey results.

Dental Therapy Licensure Legislation Rejected by ADA

In a September 26 press release, the American Dental Association rejected model legislation adopted by the American Legislative Exchange Council to authorize dental therapy; the ADA said the legislation “falls short” of ADA goals to support “cost-effective workforce innovations that advance access to quality oral health care for all.” The press release noted that, “the ADA believes that any delegated treatment tasks must be at the discretion of a licensed dentist.” In addition, the ADA said the legislation allows dental therapists to perform procedures without the proper support of a dentist.
