Using AI in Government Service Delivery—Questions to Ask
Amanda Renteria, the CEO of Code for America, shares questions to answer before using AI in government service delivery on the Silicon Valley Vibes podcast. She tells governments to ask who they plan to serve, along with what goals they hope to achieve. “Overall,” she says, “be urgent about education and understanding AI and be patient and intentional about the application and implementation of AI.” Code for America describes their mission as working “shoulder to shoulder with community organizations and government to build digital tools and services, change policies, and improve programs.”
Idaho’s Zero-Based Regulation Program
The Manhattan Institute cites Idaho’s zero-based regulation as a “useful model for achieving successful regulatory reform.” In their issue brief, Zero-Based Regulation: A Step-by-Step Guide for States, they showcase Idaho’s four-pronged approach: sunset provisions, regulatory budgets, regulatory impact analyses and OIRA-style independent reviews. By combining these measures, the report concludes, less burdensome regulations result. “The burden of proof is on those agencies attempting to justify a regulation more stringent than other jurisdictions have adopted.”
Ore. Proposes New Literacy Requirements for Teacher Licensing
Oregon’s Early Literacy Educator Preparation Council shared recommendations for improving literacy training for teachers in the state. The council recommended more comprehensive literacy standards for teacher licensing; they suggested that new licensees and those renewing licenses meet these updated standards. According to the Lincoln County Leader on August 6, “most Oregon teacher preparation programs have received failing grades for reading instruction from the Washington, D.C.-based National Council on Teacher Quality, which has convened panels of experts to review programs since 2013.”
