Audit: Neb. DHHS Mishandled Millions in Federal Dollars
Following an auditor’s report in February describing fraud in a program overseen by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, a follow up audit says the CEO of DHHS “inherited a department with ‘major issues,’ according to KOLN news on March 26. The full Statewide Single Audit report from Auditor Mike Foley’s office lists examples of mishandling. These include the lack of proper oversight of federal funds, including possible mishandling of Federal Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds. According to the report: “Some $21,410,994 in known questioned costs resulted from the inability of DHHS to document the proper expenditure of Federal Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (CSLFRF) appropriated by the Nebraska Legislature for employee retention and recruitment by developmental disability providers, assisted-living facilities, and nursing facilities in this State.”
La. Considers Universal Recognition Legislation
A Louisiana bill, approved by the House Committee on Commerce, proposes universal recognition of occupational licenses, according to the Louisiana Illuminator on March 26. If the bill becomes law, board-approved professionals from other states would be able to work in Louisiana—if they have had their license for at least one year and are in good standing. The article notes that the bill’s author, Rep. Charles Owen, found that “Louisiana requires licensure in 77 out of 102 identified low- to moderate-income trades. That’s 23 more fields than the national average.”
