Uptick in Newly Enacted Licensure Compacts

In 2023, states enacted 57 pieces of compact legislation, including six new compacts available for states to enact, according to the National Center for Interstate Compacts. The center identified support for state workforces as a consistent theme for sponsors of 2023 compact legislation. According to the NCIC “through the work of NCIC, as well as policymakers sponsoring compact-related legislation, licensees in compact member states can more quickly obtain authorization to practice and get to work in other member states.”

N.J. State Occupational Licensing Index

The 2023 State Occupational Licensing Index ranks New Jersey 19th nationally—with 1st the most burdensome. New Jersey makes it illegal to work in 185 of the 331 occupations examined, six more occupations than the national average of 179; of the 185 occupations, 23 occupations require licensure in 20 states or fewer nationally. According to the Knee Center for the Study of Occupational Regulation, New Jersey and just two other states issue a separate license for a rental listing referral agent.
