State Tech Officials Say Cybersecurity, Workforce and Budgets Challenge IT Upgrades

A survey of IT officials in 38 states shows workforce challenges, along with budget constraints and cybersecurity issues present obstacles to modernizing older systems. The National Association of State Technology Directors released the report, State Government’s IT Modernization Efforts: Status, Progress & Plans, on November 22, according to StateScoop. “The results illustrate perfectly that state government understands IT modernization is not a ‘once and done’ activity,” said Victoria Wallis, strategic project manager for the Iowa Communications Network. 

Minn. Police Board Bars Extremists from Policing

New guidelines from the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST Board) bars members and supporters of extremist and white supremacist groups from serving as police officers in Minnesota, according to KARE11 on December 11. Mendota Heights Police Chief Kelly McCarthy, chair of the POST Board, said “this is just the first section of the rules. We’re tackling everything we do. So, this is really just the first part of a very, very large undertaking.” The board also plans to change the information sought and collected in background checks of an officer.

N.C. Education Board Votes for Licensing Pilot Plan

The North Carolina State Board of Education voted December 1 for a pilot project to test a revised licensing system for teachers. The Professional Educator Preparation and Standards Commission (PEPSC) worked for months on a draft plan to change teacher licensing and pay, facing opposition from educators. The vote scales back that broader plan to a pilot plan in certain schools and districts, according to WUNC91.5. “We’re not even close to implementation, because we want to be thoughtful about how we develop this,” Board Chair Eric Davis told WUNC.
