A bill in the Kansas Senate, SB 66, helps to ease teacher licensing in Kansas by joining an interstate teacher licensing compact. The compact mandates that all states within the interstate compact grant teaching licenses to teachers who receive their licenses from other compact members. According to the Topeka Capital-Journal on Feb. 15, the Kansas “Legislature maintains its power to unilaterally enter into compacts and create its own set of licensing standards for the board and the Kansas State Department of Education to enforce.”
Connecticut lawmakers reviewed proposed occupational licensing reforms, according to CBIA on Feb. 16. A public hearing reviewed two measures related to occupational licensing reform; SB 135 sets a maximum fee of $100 for occupational licenses, and HB 5433 allows military service to satisfy licensing requirements. A study from the Institute for Justice of 102 lower-income occupations showed that Connecticut required 64% of those to obtain a license, while the national average amounts to 53%.
A Utah bill that changes the way social workers receive a license in Utah passed the State House and heads to a vote in the Senate, according to KSL5 on Feb. 16. The bill gets rid of one of two tests social workers take after graduation.
