Four Ways to Address your State Government Workforce Crisis

In a recent survey of chief administrative officers from 29 states, nearly two-thirds named bridging the near-term talent gap as one of their top priorities. To meet workforce challenges, private and public sector experience suggests four approaches that make a difference, according to Governing on May 2. Today’s workers are placing a greater value on purpose — something that is (or should be) embedded into public service.”

Mich. Gaming Board Encourages “Millionaire Parties”

According to the Michigan Gaming Control Board, Michigan charities received about $4.9 million in event net profits in 2022 from charitable poker events. Henry Williams, executive director, Michigan Gaming Control Board encourages charitable organizations to consider hosting Millionaire Parties for fundraising. The board explains that “Authorized by the state’s Bingo Act, a Millionaire Party is a charitable gaming event where wagers are placed on games of chance customarily associated with a gambling casino although poker typically is the most popular game.”

Licensing Changes Eyed to Address Teacher Shortage

The Massachusetts education board plans to address the state’s teacher shortage with revised regulations for specialized educators. According to Commonwealth on April 25, the board decided to work towards creating a simpler path for already-licensed educators to teach special education, as well as English as a second language. Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Jeffrey Riley explained “I think it’s important that we’re trying to continue to address staffing challenges while maintaining key qualifications. This would be an effort in that direction.”
